CSIR-IICB is engaged in research on diseases and certain biological problems of global interest. It is one of the major institutes in India which initiated, right from its inception, multidisciplinary concerted efforts for conducting basic research on infectious diseases, specifically leishmaniasis and cholera, along with the development of technologies for the diagnosis, immunoprophylaxis and chemotherapy of the diseases. The institute has offered substantial attention in developing drug from indigenous and natural resources like native Indian plants. The institute has also focused substantially on developing drugs from indigenous and natural resources, such as native Indian plants.
In order to strengthen the basic research and to attain translational objectives, a second campus was constructed at the Salt Lake, Kolkata. The unit is named CSIR-IICB Translational Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) whose overall mandate is to develop state-of-the-art fundamental innovation and further translate the indigenous innovations into affordable technologies. The unit is conceived as a productive platform for successful industry-institute liaison for technologies facilitation and transfer. At the nascent stage of the TRUE unit, CSIR-IICB has planned to adopt a three-way program (facilitation, incubation and translation) for meaningful transfer of research output into successful technology and subsequent contribution towards economic growth

 Animal Science / Animal House

Mission:
Animal Resource Facility of IICB-TRUE campus was inaugurated in August, 2023 by Director General of CSIR with the motto of advancing translational research for the institute and collaborating with other industries and academia to improve the quality of human life. Various immunocompromised strains of animals have been purchased and maintained for experimentation. Animal Facility has a “Two-way corridor system” and an HVAC system to reduce cross-contamination and for efficient animal house operation. The animals are well maintained under controlled environmental conditions like temperature (23+1°C), relative humidity (30-70 %), 12:12 h light and dark cycle with 100 % of fresh air exchange in animal rooms. The macro-and micro-environment around the animals are also maintained for better development of normal behaviour of animals. BMS system has been installed in the facility for CCTV surveillance and continuously monitor of the Room temperature and relative humidity. The facility has been divided into different rooms like quarantine, breeding, experimentation, and necropsy for better experimentation management. The facility provides the animals with autoclave bedding, UV-irradiated rodent feed, and RO water for well-being. This comprehensive setup enables high-quality, ethical, and reproducible animal experimentation aligned with translational research goals.
